Farmingdale DII - Weekend Recap (1/19 & 1/20)
The Farmingdale State Rams Division II hockey team had two losing performances at home over the weekend. Friday night’s matchup saw the Rams take on the New York Collegiate Hockey Club for the first time this season. It was a tightly contested, high-scoring affair between the two clubs. New York’s Calidore Robinson opened up the scoring with a shorthanded goal in the first period. The Rams answered back with a pair of goals of their own to take the lead. Peter Abazis scored at the 7:10 mark, and Kevin Manzi at the 3:41 mark. Despite the big turnaround, the Rams still went into the second period trailing due to the efforts of Brandon Avezov. He scored goals at even strength and shorthanded within the final two minutes of the period. Just 22 seconds into the third, Brendan Dixson netted a power play goal to get the game back even at three apiece. A Weston Goodman goal countered by a Collin Cross goal set up a 4-4 game in the final frame. New York’s offense bested Farmingdale in the third, with Goodman scoring his second goal of the game and Avezov completing the hat trick to go up by two goals. Dixson scored his second of the game at the 3:49 mark to try and get the Rams back into it. But one final goal from Avezov sealed a 7-5 loss at the hands of the New York Collegiate Hockey Club.
Saturday’s game featured a meeting between the Rams and the University of Central Florida Knights. Farmingdale started this game strong, with Abazis scoring the only goal of the first period. However, the second period is when the Knights took firm control of this game. Anthony Sciortino started by tying the game up at the 16:14 mark of the period. Joseph Dray and Robert Renner added a pair of UCF power play goals in the period to give them a 3-1 lead. The fourth unanswered goal and third straight power play goal came on Dray’s second power play marker of the game. Down three goals, Farmingdale showed some tremendous resilience in the latter half of this period. Dixson and Cross scored goals within two minutes of each other to suddenly turn it into a one-goal contest. The Rams fought hard to get the tying marker but were ultimately unsuccessful. With the Farmingdale net empty, Max Weinstock scored in what was a 5-3 win for the Knights over the Rams.
