Farmingdale DII - Weekend Recap (1/27 & 1/28)
The Farmingdale State Rams Division II hockey team had a win and a loss in their weekend slate. They started by hosting the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Saturday. Jake Calanni gave the Pioneers a lead early into the first period with his sixth of the season. However, that would prove to be the only Sacred Heart goal in this game. Justin DeSaro made 21 saves in what would become a winning effort for Farmingdale. The Rams offense got going in the second period, with Nicholas D’Alessandro providing the game-tying goal. At the 1:50 mark of the period, Colin Cross buried the go-ahead and game-winning goal in this contest. Brendan Dixson scored his 23rd goal of the season in the third to finalize a 3-1 victory over their conference rivals.
On Sunday, the Rams traveled to face another conference rival, the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights. A 5-minute major penalty against Rutgers led to a power play goal scored by Lukas Ferazi to open the scoring. On the same major, Zach Nutile scored a short-handed goal to tie things back up. A pair of goals from Michael Gionco, one with even strength and one on the man advantage, sent the Scarlet Knights into intermission with a 3-1 lead. Ferazi scored his second power play goal of the game to answer back in the second period. But Jamie Zimmerman was quick to respond with a goal of his own to restore the two-goal lead. At the 9:50 mark of the period, Michael D’Alessandro scored the Rams’ third power play goal to again bring them to within one. However, the Scarlet Knights got their two-goal lead back with a goal from Christian Hoppeler. The back-and-forth between the clubs continued into the third period. D’Alessandro scored his second power play goal of the game, followed by Zimmerman’s second goal of the game on the man advantage. Just a minute after Zimmerman’s goal, Louis Saccone cut the Rutgers lead down to one, followed by Hoppeler’s second goal of the game 46 seconds later. Just 25 seconds after the latest goal, Ian Ribarich once again got Farmingdale to within one. Despite their best efforts, the Rams couldn’t get this game back even. The Scarlet Knights held on for a 7-6 win over the Rams.
