by Justin Miller

The Farmingdale State Rams Division II hockey team swept the New Haven Chargers Division III team during their home-and-home series this weekend. During Friday's home game, the short-handed goal played a big factor in the early going. Ian Ribarich scored the game's opening goal while the Rams were on the penalty kill. Later in the period, the Chargers tied the game back up with a short-handed goal of their own from Luca Minopoli. A big power play goal from James Jensen would send the Rams into the intermission with a one-goal lead. The Chargers again got the score even in the second, courtesy of a goal from Peter Richetelli at the 14:30 mark of the period.

From this point on, the Rams took full control of the game. They scored four consecutive goals, featuring an even strength goal and a power play goal from Matthew Heinssen, a short-handed goal from Marco Malandruccolo, and a power play goal from Brendan Dixson. Richetelli scored his scond goal of game in the dying seconds of the period, setting up a 6-3 score to start the third period. Farmingdale would go on to play their best defensive period of the game, keeping New Haven off of the scoreboard. Goals from Colin Cross, Louis Saccone and Aidan Conlon secured a 9-3 for the Rams.

Saturday's road contest yielded similar success for the Rams. Dixson and Cross scored the only two goals of the period to give the Rams the lead. Malandruccolo opened up the second period with a goal of his own, making it a 3-0 game. James Brady got the Chargers on the board at the 15:56 mark of the period and cut the lead to two. Dixson answered back with his second power play goal of the weekend to go back up by three. A goal from Andrew Andella just 19 seconds later again brought New Haven to within two. However, Nicholas D'Alessandro netted a power play goal 15 seconds after New Haven's goal to go up by three yet again. The Chargers were able to get close again after Minopoli scored at the 9:17 mark of the third period. But with a pair of short-handed goals from Kevin Manzi and Malandruccolo, the Rams won the game by an 8-3 final score.
