Farmingdale DII - Weekend Recap (2/10 & 2/11)

by Justin Miller

The Farmingdale State Rams Division II hockey teams picked up a pair of much needed victories on the road over the weekend. The first matchup featured a big Empire Conference game against the Fairfield University Stags Division III team. The Rams got the game’s opening goal in the first period, courtesy of Colin Cross. However, the Stags answered back with a prolonged three-goal scoring run. Willem Donnelly scored a power play marker to tie the game, and Anthony Defilio scored the go-ahead goal. The three-goal run was capped off by Owen Murphy at the 16:09 mark of the second period. Despite the tough stretch of play, Farmingdale was able to settle down and get themselves back into the game. Lukas Ferazi and Brendan Dixson scored a pair of goals midway through the second to tie the game at three. The teams combined for a scoreless third period, forcing an overtime period. In overtime, Nick Bentrewicz buried the game-winning goal to secure a 4-3 victory for the Rams.

The second game of the weekend was an exhibition between Farmingdale and the Rutgers University ACHA Division I team. Even though they were considered underdogs in this contest, the Rams brought the fight to the Scarlet Knights. In the second period, Cross scored the opening goal for the second straight game. Ben Jennings responded at the 10:28 mark of the period with the tying goal for Rutgers. But within two minutes of that goal, Peter Abazis got a power play goal to take the lead back. Max Werfel scored for the Scarlet Knights near the end of the period, setting up a 2-2 tie in the final frame. From there, the Rams took over this game. Luke Richardson played a perfect third period in goal and didn’t allow the opposition to get back into it. On offense, Dixson scored the go-ahead goal at the 10:06 mark of the third period. Cross then scored his second of the game to further defend the lead. Ian Ribarich scored one final goal to officially put this game out of reach. The Rams pulled a big upset with their 5-2 win in this exhibition game.
